The concept developed revolves around the birch tree. This typically northern tree is a pioneering species and an essential material in Native American culture. Beyond the birch’s recognizable hues, the theme inspired the team’s idea of light and dark and linearity. The formalization of the project revolved around the idea of a protective, robust bark protecting a tender, warm heart. The articulation of two volumes, consisting of one light and one dark, revitalizes the static character of the old building and supports the axis of the street.
